In plain language, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead-Based Paint, Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule states that any contractor who performs work in pre-1978 built homes, schools, day care centers, and other places where children may be present and who disturbs more than 6 square feet of lead based paint must meet the EPA’s new certification requirements.
In addition, these contractors must have a HEPA certified vacuum on site to aid with disposal of contaminated debris.
Contractors will include; painters, renovators, electricians, building staff, HVAC contractors and plumbers. Fines for non-certification can be as high as $37, 500 per day, per incident.
